What do auto repair shops and mechanics do?

General auto repair covers diagnosis and repair of the systems that keep a vehicle running safely: engine, cooling, fuel, ignition, electrical, steering, suspension, exhaust and brakes. Most independent garages and dealer service departments handle routine maintenance as well as repairs. Specialised work, such as transmission rebuilds or collision repair, is often sent to specialist shops.

Modern vehicles rely on computers, so most repairs begin with a diagnostic scan. A trouble code points to a system, not necessarily the failed part; a good technician confirms the cause before replacing anything.

Signs you need it

  • The check engine light is on or flashing (flashing usually means stop driving soon).
  • New noises: knocking, grinding, squealing or clunking over bumps.
  • Fluid leaks under the car, or a sweet smell of coolant.
  • Rough idle, hesitation, loss of power or higher fuel consumption.
  • Warning lights for battery, oil pressure, temperature or brakes.

How much does it cost in Canada?

ServiceTypical cost range (CAD, estimate)Notes
Diagnostic scan and inspection$100 to $200Often credited toward the repair if you proceed.
Shop labour rate$120 to $200 per hourDealers are usually at the higher end.
Battery replacement$200 to $400Depends on battery type and size.
Starter or alternator$400 to $1,000+Parts vary widely by model.
Coolant leak repair$150 to $900+From a hose to a water pump.

These ranges reflect published Canadian price guides and typical shop rates in 2025 and 2026. Prices are estimates and vary by vehicle, city, shop and parts quality; always get a written quote.

How to choose a shop

Look for shops that employ licensed technicians, such as Red Seal automotive service technicians, explain the problem clearly and put estimates in writing. Read recent reviews on more than one platform, and prefer garages that offer a warranty on parts and labour. For brand-specific problems or warranty work, a dealer may be the better choice; for older vehicles, a reputable independent shop is often less expensive.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Is there a diagnostic fee, and is it credited toward the repair?
  • Will you call me before doing any work not on the estimate?
  • Are you using OEM, OE-equivalent or aftermarket parts?
  • What warranty covers the parts and the labour?
  • Can I see or keep the old parts?

Your rights in Ontario and Quebec. In Ontario, a repair shop must give you a written estimate before doing work unless you waive it in writing, cannot charge more than 10% above the estimate without your approval, and repairs are generally warrantied for 90 days or 5,000 km on parts and labour. In Quebec, a written estimate is also mandatory unless you waive it in writing, and repairs carry a legal warranty of 3 months or 5,000 km. See the Office de la protection du consommateur. Other provinces have consumer protection laws too; keep every estimate and invoice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a mechanic is overcharging?

Get a second written quote for any repair over a few hundred dollars, compare the parts listed and the labour hours, and check published repair-time guides. A shop that refuses to itemise its estimate is a red flag.

Should I go to the dealer or an independent shop?

Dealers have brand-specific tools and handle warranty and recall work at no charge. Independent shops are often cheaper for out-of-warranty repairs. Using an independent shop for maintenance does not void your new-car warranty if the work follows the manufacturer’s schedule and you keep records.

Can I drive with the check engine light on?

If it is steady and the car drives normally, get it scanned soon. If it flashes, the engine is likely misfiring and can damage the catalytic converter, so reduce speed and have it checked as soon as possible.
