What is brake repair?

Most cars use disc brakes: pads squeeze a rotor attached to each wheel. Pads wear with every stop, and rotors wear more slowly. Calipers, brake lines, hoses and brake fluid complete the system. Road salt and humidity make Canadian brakes especially prone to seized caliper slides and corroded rotors, which is why some vehicles need brake service sooner than the pad thickness alone suggests.

A full brake inspection measures pad thickness and rotor condition, checks caliper movement and looks for fluid leaks. Brake fluid absorbs moisture and is usually replaced every two to three years, depending on the manufacturer.

Signs you need it

  • Squealing or squeaking when braking (often the wear indicator).
  • Grinding metal-on-metal noise: stop driving and get it checked.
  • Vibration or pulsing in the pedal or steering wheel.
  • The car pulls to one side when braking.
  • A soft or sinking pedal, or the brake warning light is on.

How much does it cost in Canada?

ServiceTypical cost range (CAD, estimate)Notes
Brake pads, one axle$150 to $350Parts and labour.
Pads and rotors, one axle$300 to $700Most common brake job.
Caliper replacement, each$200 to $500Seized calipers are common with salt.
Brake fluid flush$100 to $200Every 2 to 3 years on many vehicles.

Ranges are based on Canadian price guides such as those from MyChoice and typical shop pricing; trucks, SUVs and performance vehicles cost more. Prices are estimates and vary by vehicle, city, shop and parts quality; always get a written quote.

How to choose a shop

Choose a shop that measures and shows you pad thickness and rotor condition, lists parts by brand and quality level, and offers a warranty. Very cheap brake specials often use economy pads that wear quickly or make noise. Ask whether the price includes cleaning and lubricating the caliper slides, which matters a lot in salt-belt provinces.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What is the measured pad thickness on each axle?
  • Do the rotors need replacing or can they be resurfaced?
  • What brand and type of pads will you install?
  • Is caliper service included?
  • What warranty covers the parts and labour?

Your rights in Ontario and Quebec. In Ontario, a repair shop must give you a written estimate before doing work unless you waive it in writing, cannot charge more than 10% above the estimate without your approval, and repairs are generally warrantied for 90 days or 5,000 km on parts and labour. In Quebec, a written estimate is also mandatory unless you waive it in writing, and repairs carry a legal warranty of 3 months or 5,000 km. See the Office de la protection du consommateur. Other provinces have consumer protection laws too; keep every estimate and invoice.

Frequently asked questions

How long do brake pads last?

Commonly between 40,000 and 80,000 km, but city driving, heavy loads and road salt can shorten that significantly. Rear pads may wear faster on vehicles with electronic stability systems.

Do I need new rotors every time I change pads?

Not always. Rotors that are above minimum thickness and not warped or heavily corroded can be reused. In salt-belt regions, many shops recommend replacing them together because corroded rotors are common.

Is it safe to drive with squealing brakes?

Squealing usually means the wear indicator is touching the rotor and pads are near the end of their life. Book an inspection soon. Grinding means you may be down to metal and should stop driving.
