Toronto winters are milder than in much of Canada, but snow squalls, freezing rain and slushy mornings make winter tires one of the best safety investments a GTA driver can make. This guide covers when to book your installation, what it costs and how Ontario’s rules and insurance discounts work.

Are winter tires mandatory in Toronto?

No. Unlike Quebec, Ontario does not require winter tires on passenger vehicles. However, Ontario requires insurers to offer a discount on auto insurance to drivers who install winter tires during the cold months. The size of the discount and the dates that qualify depend on your insurer, so ask before you book your changeover.

When to install winter tires in Toronto

Tire makers recommend switching once daily temperatures stay at or below about 7°C, because all-season rubber hardens in the cold and loses grip even on dry pavement. In Toronto, that usually happens between late October and mid-November. Booking early matters: shops across the GTA fill up quickly after the first snowfall, and the wait can stretch to two or three weeks.

Tip: book your fall appointment in early October and your spring removal for when overnight temperatures stay above freezing, usually in April.

Buy a second set of rims

If you plan to keep your car for several winters, a dedicated set of steel or alloy rims for your winter tires usually pays for itself. Each changeover becomes a quick swap instead of a remount, the tire beads last longer, and you can do the swap yourself or with a mobile service. Ask the shop to install new TPMS sensors or reprogram existing ones so your tire pressure light works in winter.

How to choose winter tires

  • Look for the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol on the sidewall. It identifies tires that meet a recognised snow traction standard; the M+S marking alone is not the same thing.
  • For mostly city driving on plowed streets, a studless winter tire is the standard choice in Ontario.
  • All-weather tires, which also carry the snowflake symbol, are a compromise for drivers who cannot store a second set. They are better than all-seasons in winter but usually not as good as dedicated winter tires on ice.
  • Replace winter tires when the tread gets low. Many experts suggest replacing them at about 5/32 inch (4 mm) because snow grip drops quickly below that.

Winter tire care between seasons

Proper storage adds seasons to a set of tires. Clean them before storage, keep them away from sunlight, heat sources and electric motors that produce ozone, and store mounted tires stacked flat or hung on a rack. Check the pressure at least once a month during winter: cold air lowers tire pressure, and an underinflated winter tire wears faster and grips less. Have the tires rotated at each seasonal change so they wear evenly, and mark their position on the car before removal if you do the swap yourself.

Winter tires and GTA highways

Lake-effect snow squalls can hit the 400-series highways north and east of the city with little warning, while downtown streets stay wet. If your commute takes you up Highway 400, the 404 or east toward Durham, winter tires matter even more than for purely downtown driving. Leave extra following distance on overpasses and ramps, which freeze first.

Choosing a tire shop in the GTA

Ask whether the price includes balancing, valve stems and TPMS work, whether wheel lug nuts are torqued with a torque wrench, and whether the shop recommends a re-torque after the first 50 to 100 km. For storage, ask how tires are labelled and whether the shop’s storage is insured. Ontario’s consumer protection rules on written estimates and warranties apply to tire work just like other repairs.
